What we test
Visual inspection
Casing, cable, plug and flex checked for damage, overheating, incorrect fusing and poor repairs. Most genuine faults are found here.
Earth continuity
For class I appliances we verify a low-resistance path between the earth pin and exposed metalwork — what protects the user if a live conductor comes loose.
Insulation resistance
We confirm insulation between live parts and the appliance body is intact and not degraded by age, heat or moisture.
Labelling and asset register
Each item gets a pass or fail label with test date and engineer reference, all recorded in a numbered register emailed the same day.
Failed items
Anything that fails is removed from service and clearly labelled. Fuse, plug or flex faults we usually repair on the spot and retest.
Where PAT testing fits
No law uses the words portable appliance testing. What the law does say, in the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, is that electrical systems must be maintained so as to prevent danger. For appliances, periodic inspection and testing is the accepted way of demonstrating that.
For landlords, the Housing Health and Safety Rating System means any appliance you supply must be safe. For employers the duty runs to every appliance used at work. HMO licence conditions frequently require appliance testing outright, and many insurers ask for a current record after a claim.

PAT Testing FAQs
It depends on environment and appliance. Office IT might go two to four years; hand-held site tools every three months. We recommend an interval per class of item and put it on the register.
Anything with a plug and flex — kettles, fridges, washing machines, televisions, lamps, computers, extension leads and chargers. Extension leads count individually as they are among the most common failures.
New appliances generally ship with a declaration of conformity and do not need a full test immediately, though a visual check on arrival is sensible.
Roughly 60 to 90 items in a working day for a typical office. A furnished flat with ten to fifteen items is usually under an hour.
Each appliance is unplugged briefly to be tested. We work around servers and tills, and can arrange out-of-hours visits.
