What the installation covers
RCD and RCBO protection
Your new unit gives every circuit its own protective device, so a fault on one circuit no longer takes out the whole property and shock protection is there where the regulations require it.
Metal enclosure to current standards
Domestic consumer units must be in a non-combustible enclosure. The units we fit meet that requirement and are chosen to suit the property, not the cheapest box on the van.
Earthing and bonding check
We verify the main earthing conductor and the bonding to gas and water services, and upgrade them where they are undersized. A new unit on inadequate earthing is not a safe installation.
Full circuit testing
Every circuit is tested for continuity, insulation resistance, polarity and loop impedance, so existing faults are found rather than energised behind a new unit.
Electrical Installation Certificate
You receive a full certificate with all test results recorded, and we notify Building Control as the work is notifiable under Part P.
Why old fuse boxes get replaced
A rewireable fuse box protects the cable, not the person. It has no residual current device, so it will not disconnect quickly enough to prevent a fatal shock if someone touches a live conductor or cuts through a cable. Modern units do, and that is the single biggest reason for changing one.
Older plastic enclosures were also found to contribute to fires where connections had loosened and overheated. Current regulations require a non-combustible enclosure in domestic premises, which is why metal units are now standard on any replacement.
For landlords the practical trigger is usually the EICR. An unprotected fuse box will routinely be recorded as a C2 or C3 on the report, and a C2 makes the installation unsatisfactory — which means it has to be put right before the certificate can be issued.
